Nada Yoga & Sound Meditation

“Sound is vibration and we know that vibration touches every part of our physical being… sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell in our bodies. One reason sound heals on a physical level is because it so deeply touches and transforms us on the emotional and spiritual planes. Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.”
— Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, director of Medical Oncology and Integrative Medicine, the Cornell Cancer Prevention Center in New York

The art and science of sound meditation

Since ancient times, human civilization has recognized sound as a medium of meditation and healing (singing bowls originating in the Tibetan mountains around 500BC). Sound meditation traditionally utilizes Tibetan and crystal singing bowls, hand drums, harps, flutes, gongs, and other ancient instruments to facilitate a state of deep meditation and physical relaxation.

It’s only recently that science has begun to illuminate the mechanics of healing sound. A study published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine revealed that an hour long sound meditation significantly reduced anxiety, depression, tension, anger, and fatigue, resulting in an increased experience of spiritual well-being. Another study found that ten treatments of low-frequency sound stimulation over the course of five weeks reduced pain and increased sleep in fibromyalgia patients, allowing the majority of participants to reduce pain medication.

In short, sound meditation has been found to offer various preventative and therapeutic benefits including:

  • Increased mental well-being

  • Deep relaxation

  • Reduced depression

  • Reduced stress and anxiety

  • Reduced chronic pain

  • Improved sleep

  • Lower blood pressure and cholesterol

  • Reduced risk of cardiac disease and stroke

When utilized in conjunction with traditional medical care, it can aid in treatment of various conditions including:

  • Behavioral and psychiatric disorders

  • Autism spectrum disorders

  • Dementia

  • Sleep disorders

  • Post-surgical pain

  • IBS

  • Arthritis

  • Traumatic brain injury

  • Cancer
